I’m sure there are many stories of love on the lake! In my family, we have had many generations that include Skeleton Lake as part of their love stories.
In the early 1900s my Nana and Pa, Jack (John) and Doris Haslam came to the north shore and spent their honeymoon on the lake. In 1950, their son Gerald, (my Dad) got engaged to Joyce under the tree by the shore. My Mom reminded us more than once never to cut that tree down! And to this day it still lives – as does she at the age of 90!
In 1979, Murray and I (the third generation) spent our honeymoon in the family cottage that was built in the ‘40s. I remember having hotdogs by candlelight as the hydro went off! Our romantic dinner!
In 2009, our older daughter Adele became engaged to Dan Churchill in our little canoe. The waves were whitecaps but Dan was determined. Around the point, neighbours were watching as they thought they were going to have to rescue these irresponsible “kids” in a canoe. They couldn’t understand why they weren’t paddling as Dan was down on a shaky knee asking for Adele’s hand.
In 2015, Amy our youngest, was engaged on the end of our dock to Colin, an Albertan. A year later they wed at the cottage. A barge was brought in and used to seat all the guests and then a vintage boat whisked them away!
I’m now awaiting my grandchildrens’ love stories to see if Skeleton Lake plays a part in their forever story.
